Christ Church
& Chase Side Chapel
|
|
|
This
site in Chase Side has seen a number of non-conformist buildings.
In 1780 the Zion or Old Independent Chapel was built by Peter Dupont, a
retired London Innkeeper.
In 1791 due to a split in the congregation over the appointment of a
minister the Chase Side Chapel was built just to the north of the Zion
Chapel.
In 1832 the first Chase Side Chapel was replaced by a larger building
(on the left of this picture).
In 1871 the congregations of the Zion Chapel & the Chase Side
Chapel re-united.
In 1874-7 Christ Church (on the right of this picture) was built
for the Congregationalist to replace the Zion Chapel & the Chase
Side Chapel. The architect was John Tarring and the church was designed
to rival the Anglican building of the time. This church is still a
prominent landmark in Chase Side and is now known as Christ Church United
Reformed Church.
In 1911 the Chase Side Chapel was demolished.
